Save the Sockeye Express!
The Sockeye Express is a funny little vehicle that's been taking visitors for rides around town for years. Every Saturday in the past, the Sockeye Express has provided historical tours (as well as unique transportation) to anyone who wanted to hop on. At most of our major events, like the Mardi Gras celebration, Cement City Street Fair, Fly-In and Cascade Days, the Sockeye Express has been a familiar and well-loved sight on our streets. Even the locals enjoy riding along, listening to the stories of cement plants and tall tales of timber days.
Sadly, the Sockeye Express has fallen on hard times. It has been inoperable for most of the year, and the latest diagnosis reveals a need for some major engine and brake work. At this time, we are not sure of the repair costs, or if it might need to be replaced rather than repaired. But there are many of us -- including the Concrete Chamber -- who are determined to save the Sockeye Express as the town treasure it has become.
Can you help?
A fundraising effort is now underway by the Concrete Chamber of Commerce. The goal is to raise a minimum of $7,500, but this figure may be adjusted as repair (or replacement) estimates are received.
The Concrete Theatre was the first business to donate to the fund, pledging $1,000 towards saving the Sockeye Express. Topping that, a second donation of $1,001 has been received by longtime resident and former Town Council Member Bob Stafford and his wife, Judy.
Your donation -- in any amount -- will be gratefully accepted by the Concrete Chamber of Commerce. Mail to: PO Box 743, Concrete, WA 98237, or deliver to Karen Ganion, Chamber Office Manager, at the Skagit County Community Resource Center on Main Street, Concrete (next to the library). For more information, please call Karen at (360) 853-8767, or Chamber President Valerie Stafford, at United General Hospital: (360) 856-7323 or send email.
