Visitors and locals in Concrete have a new way to experience the town’s riverfront scenery, history, and salmon habitat with the new S.báliuqʷ Interpretive Trail.

Beginning near the Concrete Community Center, the trail follows the Lower Baker River through downtown Concrete, crosses the historic Henry Thompson Bridge, and ends at the Baker River Clubhouse and Visitors Center.

Along the route, interpretive signs share stories about Upper Skagit history, local salmon habitat, hydroelectric development, and the area’s industrial past. Visitors can enjoy river views, downtown scenery, and educational exhibits throughout the walk.

The trail’s name, S.báliuqʷ, pronounced sah bah lock, honors a historic Upper Skagit village located near the Baker River confluence and reflects the area’s deep cultural history.

Baker River Clubhouse and Visitors Center

The Baker River Clubhouse

At the eastern end of the trail, visitors can explore the Baker River Clubhouse and Visitors Center, open seasonally from May through September, Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Inside the restored building, exhibits focus on:

  • Baker River salmon species and ecology
  • Regional conservation efforts
  • Local and tribal history
  • The Washington Portland Cement Company that helped shape Concrete’s identity

The Clubhouse grounds also include public restrooms, picnic tables, river viewpoints, and historic industrial archaeology features. Nearby, visitors may also catch views of returning salmon at Puget Sound Energy’s upstream adult salmon trap during peak migration seasons in summer and fall.
